What is the HyTrust Appliance?

Posted by Ken Y-N on September 22nd, 2009 at 01:17pm

On vmblog.com (tagline: Virtualization Technology News and Information) they recently published an article about HyTrust and VMware joining forces to realise trusted computing on a virtualised cloud infrastructure.

I pose the question "What is the HyTrust Appliance?" because the article doesn’t actually explain it, but it seems to be some sort of virtualisation hub for supporting a cloud computing environment. The trusted computing aspect is the use of Intel Trusted Execution Technology to support the enforcement of policies for virtualisation of the cloud through VMware.

HyTrust do not appear to be members of the Trusted Computing Group, but they do seem to have a skill set that would be useful to bring to the table regarding TPM virtualisation, although note that this press release regarding the HyTrust Appliance has no relation to TPM virtualisation issues.

    Ken,
by the way of brief overview, HyTrust offers a centralized, single-point-of-control for virtual infrastructure access, policy management, security configuration, and compliance that enables organizations to cost-effectively implement virtualization under control.

The main benefit is obtained by defining and enforcing object-based policies. The appliance
o Provides granular authorization of all virtual infrastructure management operations according to user role, object, user-defined object-labels, protocol and IP address
o Leverages previous infrastructure investment by integrating with existing directory servers and by importing user roles directly from VMware vCenter

The functionality is applicable both to cloud environment as well as to enterprise deployments of virtualization.
