Seagate sells one million self-encrypting drives

February 17th, 2011 at 02:40pm Under Storage

Quite frankly, my first thought was "Is that all?" when I read a press release from Seagate talking about them reaching this milestone. My second thought was that there were some weasel words about Opal compliance: Several major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are now qualifying Momentus SEDs that are compliant with the Trusted Computing Group’s [...]

October 1st, 2010 at 04:09pm Under Storage

An interesting bit of news from itBusiness.ca has been that Seagate’s Momentus range of self-encrypting hard drives have been awarded FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-2 certification, meaning that they can now sell these Trusted Computing Group Opal-compliant drives to US and Canadian federal agencies and other governmental bodies that require FIPS certification on the [...]

Buy TCG-based storage today

November 29th, 2008 at 12:10pm Under Advocacy+ Storage

Jon Oltsik of CNet recently published what amounts to a call to action to security professionals to start requesting the purchase of hard drives supporting disk-level encryption. Encrypted storage and disk arrays

June 24th, 2008 at 08:18am Under Storage

I’ve previously highlighted Seagate’s encrypted drive but this article from the Trusted Computing Group’s (TCG) official blog looks at best practises for hardware encryption-based disk arrays. Two key documents from the TCG’s Storage Group are an application note from November 2007 entitled “Encrypting Drives in an Array Controller” and “Key Management Services Application Note”. These [...]

Storage security and TCG

April 28th, 2008 at 02:18pm Under Storage

An interesting article was recently published by INFOSTOR, written by Dr Michael Willett, co-chair of the Trusted Computing Group’s (TCG) Storage Working Group (SWG), and a senior director at Seagate Research. One of the drivers behind the SWG is that there is a definite move towards performing backups to disk rather than tape. In addition, [...]
