According to the ITExaminer, there has been a release of a cross-platform, full-disk encryption utility by Winmagic. The bit of interest for me is that: The utility also supports a number of hardware-encrypted disk drives, including those designed using TCG’s (Trusted Computing Group) ‘Opal’ specification. As I’ve said many times before, the TPM-based low-level full [...]

In a look at the latests TCG Secure Storage specifications, Computerworld reports that experts predict all drives will be self-encrypting in five years. I think that full disk encryption is the TCG standard that is most immediately relevant to the average end-user, so such moves would be more than welcome by me.

TechRepublic’s Servers and Storage blog posted about server-side full disk encryption based upon the TCG standards. The full article is a good summary of the four standards released to cover the data centre, local hard drives, interface standards, and optical disks. The conclusion is: I believe it’s a matter of time before governments pass laws [...]

A legitimate concern highlighted by Computerworld regarding the TCG’s hard disk self-encryption standards is how do you recover from a lost password. Thankfully, the TCG’s Storage Working Group thought of that, and techniques to alleviate the problem include a way to back up the data securely, and the ability to set a second administrator emergency [...]

On the Encryption, Cryptography, Law, and Privacy Discussion Forum mirrored to the Cryptography, Law and Privacy Blog I saw an article on full-disk encryption and TCG standards. It all seems a bit paranoid, quite frankly, implying that FDE is going to lull you into a false sense of security then lock out all your data. [...]

Fudzilla’s Nick Farrell reported on the impending release of the full-disk encryption standard from the Trusted Computing Group. One issue I have with the article is: When a USB drive is unplugged, or when a laptop is powered down, or when an administrator pulls a drive from a server, it can’t be brought back up [...]

From SearchSecurity comes the news that IBM are now offering hardware-based full disk encryption for customers using their System x servers. Their IBM System x VAULT, as it is known, leads the system manager through the encryption process, allowing one of four possible levels of security to be chosen, and costs around $1,200. How much [...]

For me this is the biggest no-brainer when it comes to looking at deployment of higher-security data protection systems in the enterprise, or even at home. The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) has specified a low-cost solution that implements encryption at the disk drive level. As Roget Kay of Endpoint Technologies says: “I’m surprised that more [...]
