Is it too late to secure the internet?

This is the question posed by Simon Moores in his article entitled “Are we losing the security war?” He thinks yes, we (the good guys, the corporations trying to defend against cyber crime) have already lost.

Five years ago his hopes were that yes, we can win and we will soon be on the attack. This was in a report sponsored by Microsoft for Infosec 2003 called “A Matter of Trust”, looking at their Trustworthy Computing initiative.

However, now he looks at the internet and sees:

we have entire internet relay chat networks controlled by the criminal underground economy, that cyber crime could be almost as big as the value of the global illegal drug trade – no one really knows – and that as many as one billion personal computers – 12 per cent of the world’s total internet connected machines – could be hiding malware of one type or another.
