Inactive TPMs are a waste

On the official Trusted Computing Group (TCG) blog, Rob Enderle posted about how security software should take advantage of the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) built into many enterprise computers these days. Along with the fact that less than 10% of TPMs are turned on these days, Dell, who ship their business offerings with TPMs, recently launched a suite of programs for security management of computers, from tracking lost and stolen laptops to remote access, but none use facilities of the TPM.

This, he suggests, and I agree, is such a waste as the TPM is a proven solution, and even though many of the computer manufacturing companies that are members of the TCG are shipping them in their devices, even their latest security software packages completely ignore the presence of this device.

I heard recently from someone who knows what he is talking about that the TPM is the only solution there is for security in the connected world. Why aren’t people using it more?

That’s a puzzle I don’t know the answer to!
