Full disk encryption is the future

In an online republishing of a full article from SCMagazine UK entitled Built-in encryption is the future of storage, Jessica Twentyman argues that industry must, and will be forced by legislation, to adopt full disk encryption as the best line of defense for data at rest.

The best option is built-in low-level encryption such as that defined by the Trusted Computing Group’s Opal specification. As the article says:

Built-in hard-disk encryption offers three compelling advantages: scalability, managed complexity and cost.

There’s also an interesting look at security of data at rest in the cloud; I don’t know if this is an area the TCG is investigating, but I would be surprised if they weren’t.
