Full disk encryption for servers

TechRepublic’s Servers and Storage blog posted about server-side full disk encryption based upon the TCG standards.
The full article is a good summary of the four standards released to cover the data centre, local hard drives, interface standards, and optical disks. The conclusion is:
I believe it’s a matter of time before governments pass laws related to full-disk encryption, so these kinds of cooperative standards are welcome, as they will hopefully result in minimal consumer impact while providing maximum protection.
I’m not sure if I would welcome such a step if it were applied industry-wide, although for certain fields, such as data retained by public servants or companies storing personally-identifiable data on their customers, it makes a lot of sense.
