There has been a press release today from Fujitsu describing how they will release a new disk drive with the part ID MHZ2 CJ at the end of May 2008 featuring 256-bit AES encryption support built-in to reduce overhead. The system is (perhaps, it is not 100% clear from the press release) built around the specifications developed by the Trusted Computing Group’s (TCG) Storage workgroup.
Features of the drive include 7,200 rpm spin speed, 3.0 Gb/s Serial ATA bus, instant (under one second) total disk erasure, and as mentioned above, disk drive controller-based encryption that imposes no overhead on the main CPU or operating system while ensuring that data on the drive is always encrypted.
Fujitsu forecast sales of 2 million units by the end of 2008 financial year.
